Property Ownership

Homeowners are encouraged to participate in the Starter Burrow Program.

If you rent your home, written permission from the property owner is required before a starter burrow can be installed.

Pet Safety

Outdoor cats and unattended dogs can pose a risk to burrowing owls. Properties that provide a safe environment for wildlife offer the

greatest opportunity for successful nesting.

Open Habitat

Burrowing owls prefer open spaces with good visibility.

Large shrubs, dense landscaping, or structures near the

burrow entrance may reduce the suitability of a location.

Wildlife-Friendly Lawn Care

Responsible lawn care helps protect burrowing owls and the insects they

rely on for food. Limiting the use of pesticides, herbicides,
